What’s your Goal - 2016?

The New Year is here and with it comes a wave of fresh motivation and hope for what we might be able to achieve over the coming 12-months. The most important thing we need to remember when setting our goals for the year is to apply a few basic rules to help us keep our focus and make sure we’re able to make this year our best one yet!

First and foremost is to apply the SMART principle to your goal setting. Most of us have heard of this before but for those who haven’t the acronym stands for Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed. In short, this means to be very detailed in how you set your goal, make sure it is something that you personally can achieve and give yourself a deadline to achieve this goal.

During 2016 I would like to break 10 hours for the Iron-distance triathlon

Secondly, remember that writing down your goal is just the first step. You now need to put together a plan of action to achieve those goals. If your goal for example is to break 10hrs in an iron-distance event, you need to ask yourself a number of questions:

How are you going to achieve this?

Where can you improve your overall performance?

Do I need to allocate more time to training or recovery?

What challenges will I face in achieving these goals?

These crucial questions are ones that will shape the outline for achieving your goals and lay the foundations for success in 2016.

The final thing to do is put your plan into action and then live it everyday. Draw on every inspiration you can, seek advice from those you trust and share your journey with those you love. Enjoy the process through both the ups and downs (and I promise there will be plenty of both) and you will be sure to look back on 2016 with a smile.
